The trap of "where do I even start with deep learning?"

Decide you want to study deep learning and big data to land a job, and you usually end up wandering in this order: buy a famous course, go back and relearn the math, try to read papers and get discouraged... I've walked this exact path myself. But if the goal is actually getting hired, this approach is aimed slightly off target.

Here's the core of it.

Companies don't hire "the person who knows the most." They hire "the person who has something they actually ran."

So if your goal is landing or switching jobs, a portfolio project comes before finishing courses. This post is a roadmap of what to do, and in what order, from that angle.

First: "deep learning" and "big data" are different fields

They get lumped together a lot, but they have different textures. Separating them clarifies the scope of what you need to study.

  • Deep learning: training models on data to predict or generate. Centered on Python + frameworks.
  • Big data: infrastructure for storing, processing, and analyzing large-scale data. Centered on distributed systems + SQL.

Pick a job role first — it cuts your study scope by two-thirds

In the job market, this field splits into roughly three roles. Since the required skills differ between them, picking just one dramatically shrinks how much you need to study.

If you already have development experience, ML Engineer or Data Engineer is the more favorable path. You get to carry over your existing dev skills (backend, deployment, cloud) directly. The job-focused roadmap (6–9 month basis)

Stage 1 — Fundamentals (1–2 months)

  • SQL: guaranteed to come up in interviews for any of these roles. Get solid up through subqueries and window functions.
  • Python + Pandas: you need to be able to handle data preprocessing fluently.

Stage 2 — Core skills (2–3 months)

Narrow down based on your chosen role.

  • Aiming for ML Engineer → PyTorch + model deployment
  • Aiming for Data Engineer → Spark + Airflow
  • Common to both → one cloud platform (AWS or GCP). Most real-world work runs on the cloud.

Stage 3 — Portfolio project (2–3 months, the most important part)

This is where the job hunt is actually won or lost.

  • 1–2 projects that solved a real problem start-to-finish land far stronger in interviews than a high Kaggle ranking.
  • The ideal flow: data collection → preprocessing → model training → deployed as an API → a simple demo. Document this entire process on GitHub.
  • A developer's edge: most people stop at a Jupyter notebook, but you can show it all the way through deployment. That's your differentiator.

  1. Start solving SQL problems — HackerRank, LeetCode Database, etc. You can start today
  2. Run a PyTorch tutorial on Google Colab — free GPU, no environment setup needed
  3. Pick one small project topic — using data from a domain you're actually interested in

Pick a role → SQL → role-specific core skills → a portfolio that ships all the way to deployment

If I had to name just one to start today, it's SQL. It's the most consistently asked-about, the longest-lasting skill, and something you can start this very moment. It's fine if you never finish a course. One small thing that actually runs end-to-end beats ten lines on a resume.
